HUDDERSFIELD CIVIC SOCIETY

INVITATION TO MEMBERS AND THEIR GUESTS

‘THE STONES OF HUDDERSFIELD’

7.00pm Tuesday 14th May 2013

Meet by the Harold Wilson Statue, St. George’s Square

EVENING WALK

Our evening walk will be led by Alison Tymon, former teacher of geology at Greenhead College and acknowledged as a leading authority in the building stones of our town. Alison is Vice Chairman of Huddersfield Geology Group and a member of West Yorkshire Geology Trust. She has taken a key role in the development of various publications and trails including ‘The Rocks and Landscapes of Huddersfield’, ‘Guide to the Building Stones of Huddersfield’, and two geological trails around Castle Hill.

The evening will comprise a short walk from St George’s Square, to Market Square and along New Street to see the use of local sandstones and imported igneous and metamorphic rocks for the construction and decoration of Huddersfield’s civic and commercial buildings.

It would be useful to bring a magnifying glass if you have one, to see the details of the rocks more clearly.

Those who have seen the recent heritage trail produced by HCS and Huddersfield Local History Society will gain an even greater insight into the building materials that have helped shape our town.

A ‘not to be missed’ event.

Huddersfield Heritage

A town centre trail

The self-guided trail can be followed with a free colour guide and map available from local libraries and information centres. The handy guide gives both visitors and local people an introduction to the features and history of the town. The initiative has been developed by a partnership of Huddersfield Civic Society and Huddersfield Local History Society with funding from the Huddersfield Area Committee of Kirklees Council.

The Heritage Trail is being developed further with an interpretation board in St Georges Square, building plaques are being designed and phone apps are being considered. Other Huddersfield town centre trails are being prepared for launch later in the year.

Huddersfield Heritage is to boost tourism in the town centre
