Meet at Cleckheaton Town Hall, Bradford Road, Cleckheaton
Those members who have participated in our annual evening visits (last year to Wakefield), will know how illuminating an enjoyable they are. This year we have arranged a tour of Cleckheaton, led by Erica Amende, of Spen Valley Civic Society.
Even though Cleckheaton is Kirklees fourth largest town with a population of over 16,000, the town is probably little known to many of us, even though it has some architecturally impressive buildings and strong associations with the Luddites, the Bronte sisters and others. Did you know for example that Edward Wadsworth, one of the great figures of British art in the early 20th century and Roger Hargreaves of Mr. Men fame, were born in the town!
We meet outside Cleckheaton Town Hall at 6.30 pm (there is a car park adjacent to the Town Hall), an impressive late Victorian building opened in 1892. From here Erica will reveal the wealth of impressive chapels, mills and monuments, in a town that became known as the wool carding capital of the world.
The walking tour will last approximately 1.5- 2.0 hours ending at the Rose and Crown PH in Westgate where we will enjoy our traditional supper (please inform us when booking if you are a vegetarian).
The evening will cost £8.50 per person and numbers will be limited to 25 people so don’t delay in booking a place for yourself and any guests you wish to bring. There will be a hearty buffet supper (if you require a vegetarian option please let us know when booking). Bookings - no later than Friday 27 July please as we need to confirm numbers with the pub – by contacting Michael Barron, email: email@example.com, telephone: 01484 537080.
Travel to Cleckheaton will be by private transport (evening bus links from Huddersfield are poor). Should anyone wish to be picked up from Huddersfield please let Michael know. We will do our best to arrange car sharing.
