![]() By DAVID WYLES, Chairman, Huddersfield Civic Society I was saddened to hear of the death of Joe Marsden who, with his brother John and families, contributed so much to the town over many years. Joe epitomised what is termed ‘the hospitality industry’, with his warm welcome, generosity, humour and understanding of the people for whom the night club, bistro and hotels became their favourite venues. I was honoured to work closely with Joe and John from the time the Huddersfield Hotel opened in the mid 1980s. The hotel deservedly achieved the highest occupancy of any hotel in the district welcoming guests, including many of the Last of the Summer Wine cast, such as Peter Sallis, who stayed over the many years of filming.
More recently the Central Lodge has provided the same high standards of service, much as a result of Joe’s personality and hard work. His contribution to the work of Huddersfield Civic Society and the society’s objectives has, similarly demonstrated a staunch loyalty and enthusiasm for the town. Joe and John have supported the society for many years and their hospitality in hosting HCS workshops at the Central Lodge in 2019 was very much appreciated. My personal thanks to Joe for his friendship and support and on behalf of the civic society for all he has done to talk up the town.
